Bichons are an excellent breed of dog, a cuddly toy puppy that all children love. Intelligent with a happy disposition, the great thing about them is that they don’t shed…which makes caring for them much easier around the house.
They are called toy dogs because they are considered “lap dogs,” meaning they like to cuddle up in your lap. Although they are small, they are very resistant. They can be feisty, but they are sensitive, playful, and very affectionate nonetheless.
Bichon dogs were primarily used by the Spanish as a working Spanish ship’s dog when they went out to sea. His job was to meet people with great enthusiasm. They were suitable for boats because bichons love the water, don’t shed, and make excellent companions.
They can weigh up to 12 pounds and be up to 12 inches tall. They are generally all white and have a life expectancy of about 15 years like other breeds. The American Kennel only recognized the Bichon dog in 1973, although it had been around in the US since the 1950s. Its history dates back to the water spaniels – poodle category, dating back to 600-300 BC. They were originally called “barbichon” due to their small bearded appearance as their hair grew. But its main popularity was in Spain, later spreading to France, then to the US and Canada, and finally to Australia.
Because of their temperament, they have become a favorite among families with young children and older retirees.
