This is the same training Reg Park trained with to win the 1951 Mr. Universe title. He won Mr. Universe again in 1958, becoming the first to win the prestigious event twice. Park, who later replaced Steve Reeves as Hercules in the mid-’60s, put on 25 pounds of muscle on an already solid frame in 10 months with this program.
Reg trained three days a week on this routine. He ate 3-4 meals a day and had a protein drink made of milk, cream and honey, which he drank six times a day. Proof that he doesn’t need to buy expensive supplements.
Take any photo of Reg Park and you will see what hard work and determination can do. Remember, Park was a pre-steroid, all-natural bodybuilder. And to me he looks so much better and more powerful than today’s drug induced bodybuilders.
The Reg Park Classic Training 1951
5×10 squats
bench press 5×10
Weighted Dips 5 x 12
Barbell curl 5×10
French Presses 5 x 10
Chin 5 x 10
Donkey lifts 5 sets
abs 5 sets
Notes: There was no rep schedule for his abs and calves, he would work them until he had enough. Park, like all veterans, lifted heavy weights and didn’t use many isolation exercises in his routine. If he decides to follow this schedule and feels exhausted three days a week, cut it down to two. Park had exceptional genetics and a resilience most don’t have.
Understand that to be successful in any weight training program, hard work is a must! Half-hearted effort does nothing for you. If you are new to weight training or severely out of shape, first consult a doctor and participate in a beginner’s program. End of disclaimer.
