Determining which fondue pot to buy can be a bit tricky. Basically, there are two types of heaters that are available for purchase: those with a built-in heating system and those with an external heating source.
The typical built-in heating source is electric. Electric pots work very well because they can accommodate a larger capacity. Most hold three to four quarts. They are able to maintain this because the electrical heating is applied more evenly across the entire cooking surface.
Another advantage of electric fondue pots is that many models offer temperature control. This makes it much easier to follow recipes and helps prevent food from scorching or burning.
By contrast, pots without built-in heat typically rely on a fuel burner or even candles. This is very inefficient as the heat is only applied to the bottom of the cooking surface. Because of this, it is much easier to burn food. In addition, the capacity of this type of fondue pot is usually less. The reason is that the heat is not distributed well enough to effectively heat more than 20 to 30 ounces of liquid at a time.
However, the downside to electric fondues is that they can wear out over time. The power cord may short circuit or fail. On the other hand, fondue pots without built-in heat are usually made of stainless steel or ceramic and are very durable. If cared for properly, these should last a lifetime. The downside is that these pots rely on external heat. Therefore, you need to buy specially manufactured fuel gels or tea lights, the costs of which can add up over time.
While electric fondues cost a bit more, they generally save you money in the long run. Even the lowest quality models should last eight to ten years, even with frequent use. During that same period of time, you would have to spend extra money on fuel and candles to use a traditional pot. That really isn’t a very good option.
Both types of fondue pots are functional and can produce fantastic results when used correctly. Electric fondue makers, however, offer advantages that cannot be matched by old-style pots with external heat sources. Chief among these advantages is the ability to choose from a wide range of cooking temperatures.
Whichever type of pot you choose, your family and friends will love to dine on bubbly cheese and silky chocolate. It’s an excellent solution for a special family meal, or just to treat someone special. Best of all, these fondue pots don’t cost a lot of money. You can usually buy them for between twenty and fifty dollars each.
