The San Francisco 49ers of the 1980s and early-mid 1990s were one of the greatest teams the National Football League has ever seen. They’ve won division titles, conference championships, and of course, multiple Super Bowls. They did all of this thanks to great ownership, great coaches, and some of the most talented and intelligent football players in the league.
Two main reasons the 49ers were so successful during this time were the incredible quarterbacks they had. Joe Montana led the team through the 1980s and into the new decade before the team turned the offense over to the very capable hands of Steve Young. The 49ers dominated several teams during this era, but there is an interesting fact related to Montana and Young and the touchdown passes they threw during their careers.
Throughout his career, including his time with San Francisco and his final time with Kansas City, Joe Montana threw more touchdown passes against the Atlanta Falcons, a total of 38, than against any other team. Steve Young began his career in Tampa Bay, following his time in the USFL, before finally joining the 49ers. Throughout his career, he threw 37 touchdown passes against the Falcons, more than he would throw against any other team.
Joe Montana and Steve Young were great quarterbacks for the San Francisco 49ers. They both helped their team excel and accomplished things many 49ers fans didn’t think possible just a few years before the 1980s rolled around. They had a lot in common, and one of them was their success against the Atlanta Falcons. .
