The truth about tooth decay

May 7, 2022 by admin

Tooth decay, or more commonly known as cavity, is the result of tooth decay. It is caused by bacteria that thrive in the mouth and excrete acids that eat away at a tooth. Tooth decay causes pain, infection, and worst tooth loss if not treated right away.

Plaque is the sticky substance that forms between the teeth and the gums. It also contains a bacterium that feeds on sugar from the food we eat. These bacteria begin to attack the tooth when they are left inside the mouth for long periods of time. It leads to the destruction of the protective layer of the tooth called enamel. Unfortunately, when the tooth is affected by decay, it does not show any symptoms until such time as a decay is already visible. So an individual would experience pain with the tooth, so toothache would be the first symptom of caries.

Visiting a dentist or dental hygienist regularly for a check-up helps in the early detection of possible cavities. Treatments may vary depending on the severity of the affected tooth. Moderate infection can be resolved by filling or covering the broken part of the tooth. These fillings would come in the form of metal, alloy, plastic, porcelain, or another combination of materials. Severe cases of cavities may need a crown; another dental appliance made of gold or porcelain or a combination of other materials that replaces or covers the entire portion of the affected tooth. Another treatment is called a root canal; Root canals remove the infected core of the tooth called the pulp. It is a dental procedure that also helps to cure toothache and infection. The worst case of tooth decay involves tooth extraction.

Prevention of dental caries is easy, simply by following proper dental hygiene. Brushing your teeth regularly three times a day or at least after each meal, using fluoride toothpaste helps to strengthen the enamel from acid attacks. Flossing after brushing your teeth would also help remove those bits of food that are hiding between your teeth and missed by regular brushing. Avoiding foods that are high in sugar, such as chocolate and candy, also helps prevent cavities.

Tooth decay does not choose any age; would affect those who are unaware of their dental condition. Neglecting the health of our teeth can cause more problems in the future. Treatments are always available, although it would be better if one made sure that there are none that need treatment.
