There are so many segments in our energy production and consumption pie that it’s hard to know where to begin a discussion. This report deals strictly with carbon dioxide emissions per capita purely from fossil fuel electricity, provided for domestic use. Remember, this is per capita, not nation by nation.
If you thought the US is leading the way, luckily you’re not even close.
Perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised to find that the worst offenders are the oil-producing nations. After all, the supply of fuel is very cheap for them, so why not use it to provide power? That obviously makes sense, but it comes at a high environmental price.
The top three nations are:
* Kuwait, with a little less than 8,000 KG of CO2 emissions per capita
* Bahrain, with approximately 7,000 KG per capita
* The United Arab Emirates at about 5,300 KG per capita
Estonia in Europe follows with 3,900 KG, slightly ahead of the US with over 3,800 KG.
Next in line is Australia, then Qatar, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia, Denmark, Russia, the Czech Republic, Ireland, Serbia, Oman, Poland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium and Israel. At this point, we are down to 2,200 kg per capita.
Note that five of the top nine emitters per capita are oil-producing Asian countries.
Where does China fit into this mix? Most of the power generated in China comes from coal-fired power plants, and coal is included in these statistics. China ranks 71st, behind countries like Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Lithuania, Moldova, Jordan, Singapore, Spain, South Africa, New Zealand, and the list goes on.
Someone has to be at the bottom of the list, an enviable achievement, right? You decide if you would like to live there.
Here are the bottom five starting with the winner:
*North Korea
*Zambia
* DR Congo
*Mozambique
* Ethiopia
There are 134 nations included in the original report, which was provided by the International Energy Agency. The bottom twenty nations have basically no emissions per capita for this one use only, the production of electricity for domestic use.
