For years, I have a Vision Board, where I publish my dreams, inspirations and aspirations. I have encouraged our children to do the same, and there is always great excitement in the house when someone is redoing their vision board. We all love to give suggestions and see what the rest of the family dreams or aspires to. It is a wonderful way to spend family time together.
Vision boards, which were popularized by the book/DVD, “The Secret,” which focuses on “The Law of Attraction.” can be used for various things. The most common are for your personal or business life. But they can also be used for a specific dream or aspiration. Great vision board ideas are if they are for weddings or holidays where the focus of the whole board can be this. They help provide clarity and give us focus. It is a creative visualization project, which can really change our lives.
Vision boards can be made on a computer and saved there, and there are even programs available to make them. But personally I prefer to have a homemade vision board, which is always visible to me. I have 2 in my study, both hanging where I can see them. One is for my personal life, and the other is for my business. They’re really simple to make, and I’ve included instructions below.
The idea behind a vision board is to surround yourself with pictures of goals you might have, things you’d love to have, who you’d like to become, where you want to live, and what you want to do. The images are there to motivate us to achieve all these things.
I change photos quite regularly and sometimes redo entire boards. How I find my goals, dreams and aspirations change regularly. Often, I’ve accomplished something on the board and it doesn’t need to be there anymore. I use a felt pin board, rather than stick them on a board, as this way I can change them as needed.
1) Prepare your stage, putting on your favorite music. I enjoy my mediation playlist as it relaxes me and I feel more in touch with what I really want to put on my vision board. I love serving a glass of my favorite wine, but in the winter, a nice cup of hot tea, soup is just as good. Light a candle or burn some incense to really set a mood. Have everything you need with you, so you can really focus and participate.
2) My favorite is flipping through magazines (I’m a magazine addict, and it’s a good excuse to stock up on all my favorite magazines). Sometimes I also google photos, of specific things. Great websites for photos and inspiration are We Heart It and Pinterest. I would even recommend drawing pictures, though mine wouldn’t be very inspiring as I’m a useless cartoonist. Photos are great too, and it’s actually motivating to put a photo of yourself right in the middle of your board. Start with too many photos, so that you can use a deletion process, to get a feel for what you really want on your board.
3) I then print or cut out all my photos, which often include inspirational words, and hang them on my board. Many of the photos that I have are things that I would love to have. But because I love to travel, they often include photos of places I’d like to travel to. I often add things I’d love to experience, including adventures, food, and drinks.
4) Draw a circle on a piece of paper and circle the percentage of each of the following. Family, Health, Work, Spirituality, Relationships, Self, and any other headings you’d like to add. Then sort the photos into these categories, to make sure you’re covering everything in your life that’s important to you.
5) Once you have everything ready, you can start your photo collage etc. I love a random collage, but some people prefer all the photos to be the same size and nice and neat. It is something personal and important that you do what resonates with you.
6) After completing it, sit back, breathe and know that you are one step further in achieving all your goals and dreams. Once your dreams start to come true, remember to be grateful every time you delete a photo of something you’ve accomplished.
Good, now I’ve got motivated to get going on my vision board this weekend. It’s rainy and cold, so I’ll build the fire, light my flameless candles, put my meditation music on my iPod, make a nice warm gluwein (using my new healthy recipe), serve up a bowl of warm vegetable soup, and settle in for the day. I will have lots of magazines. And I’m sure the rest of the family will join in. I can’t think of a better way to spend a winter day with the family. I wonder what will I put on it? Definitely a picture of healthy food, a happy family, a picture of the new car I want, and much more.
