I would think that everyone knows about owning a firearm for self defense. They are great if you have it on hand when you need it. However, in my experience, that is often not the case. Usually the violence just breaks out or breaks out instantly and without warning.
Most martial arts teach different types of weapon skills. The problem is that you can’t go around carrying almost all the weapons they teach you. He would probably be arrested at the hearing in most cases. In the other cases you would look like an idiot. But there are a couple of weapons that are very similar to the martial arts version that you can carry with you and not seem obvious. Let’s take a minute or two to discuss some common and readily available weapons that can be used for self-defense.
The first is so obvious that you may never have considered it. Car keys. Yes, good car keys can be used as a weapon. I know you’re wondering how well now, so I’ll go ahead and tell you. Put the keys in the palm of your hand and make a fist. Let one or two of the keys protrude through your fingers. This is a nasty turn for brass knuckles. Hit the face, eyes, throat, and any other soft tissue areas that present themselves with the keys. You can imagine the damage those steel spikes will do to human flesh.
Certain types of key rings have keys on two opposite ends that are separated by a piece of nylon or similar material. With these types of keychains, you can hold one end of the keys and use it to hurl the heavier end like a mini whip at your attacker’s face and eyes. You can also buy keychains made especially for self defense.
The next common weapon that you probably already carry around is a comb or brush. Many men carry a pocket comb in their back pocket and can quickly pull it out. You can use the comb or brush to cut and rake soft tissue areas, especially the eyes and throat. The handle end of the brush can be used to pierce and tap on areas such as under the nose, temples, eyes, etc.
The third weapon that most people never consider is a cane or cane. Batons and sticks are versatile as they can be used for blocking, hitting, and hitting. An umbrella can also be used in the same way. The pointed metal end is excellent for prodding. Hapkido is a Korean martial art style that teaches numerous stick techniques. You can also buy books that teach you how to use a cane for self defense. Again, if you don’t want to carry a cane, you can take a stick, if you can find one, and use it in the same way.
I talked earlier about having a firearm. In most states it is illegal to carry a firearm unless you are a law enforcement officer or have a special permit. There is another alternative that is legal. Tasers and stun guns are available for sale. However, if you decide to wear one, you should keep it in your hand or on your belt while traveling through dangerous or suspicious areas. Again, if you can’t get to it quickly, it probably won’t do you any good. And ladies, if it’s in his bag, you’ll probably never get a chance to get it out. Remember, violence usually breaks out suddenly.
Lastly, when all else fails, reach for a bottle, a phone, a book, whatever is loose and available. Trash can lids can be used as shields. Almost anything can be used as a weapon. If you think about it for a few minutes, you’ll probably come up with a lot more ideas of things you can use for self-defense.
